COLUMBUS, Ohio – The California softball team defeated Dayton 12-7 on Wednesday before falling to host Ohio State 10-3 in a double header at Buckeye Field.
Â
Cal left Columbus with an 11-22 record after the nonconference contests.
Â
Against the Flyers,
Carly Raven knocked in 5 RBI – from a 2-run double in the first inning and homeruns in the third and sixth – to lead the Golden Bears, while
Mya McGowan struck out three and pitched a complete game to get the win.
Â
In a big first inning, Raven hit a one-out double to score
Gator Robinson and
Emma Jackson, and
Kyndal Todd followed with a two-run HR to give Cal a 4-0 lead. The HR gave Todd a team-leading seven on the season. With two outs, Robinson forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk and Jackson singled in a run to make the score 6-0. Cal scored twice in the third — highlighted by Robinson's solo HR, her sixth of the season — and Raven blasted a two-run HR in the fourth to give the Bears a 10-0 advantage.
Â
The Flyers pulled two runs back in the fourth and scored twice more in the fifth to make the score 10-4, before Raven hit a solo HR — her fifth of the year — in the top of the sixth to give the Bears an 11-4 lead.
Maddie Rey doubled in Robinson in the top of the seventh to push Cal's lead to 12-4, before Dayton tacked on three runs in the bottom of the inning to make the final score 12-7.
Â
In the nightcap, after a two-run HR gave Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, Cal got a run-scoring double from Todd and then a sacrifice fly from
Kayli Counts in the top of the fourth to tie the score 2-2.
Â
But the Buckeyes broke open the game with four runs from a solo HR and a three-run shot in the bottom of the inning that made the score 6-2. Ohio State added two more runs in the fifth off a run-scoring triple and a groundout to lead the Bears 8-2.
Â
Rey hit her second HR of the season in the top of the sixth and Cal clawed closer to its hosts at 8-3.
Â
But the Buckeyes added a 2-run HR in the top of the sixth to push their lead to 10-3 and end the scoring for the night.
Â
Cal now heads to South Bend, Indiana, to resume ACC action in a three-game series against Notre Dame that starts Friday.
