RALEIGH – The California softball team dropped the series opener to NC State, 14-8, on Friday evening at Dail Softball Stadium.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from
Maddie Rey, but the Wolfpack answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to move in front.

Anya German crushed a solo homer to left to cut the NC State lead to 3-2. NC State added two runs in the second to stretch its lead to 5-2.

After a scoreless third inning, Cal's offense erupted for five runs in the fourth to retake the lead. Rey delivered a bases-loaded double to drive in three runs, then later scored on an error. German added an RBI double to put the Bears in front, 7-5.

The Wolfpack responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim the lead at 8-7. NC State then added five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to build a 14-7 advantage.

German capped the scoring with her second solo home run of the game in the seventh, bringing the final score to 14-8.

With the loss, the Bears fall to 13-28 overall and 3-13 in ACC play. Cal and NC State return to action Saturday at Dail Softball Stadium.
