Cal Drops Tight 5-4 Contest At NC State

Rey, Togia Spark Late Push But Bears Fall 5-4

RALEIGH – The California softball team came up short in game two against NC State, 5-4, on Saturday evening at Dail Softball Stadium.

The Wolfpack jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer and added another run in the third to extend the lead to 3-0.

Emma Jackson put the Bears on the board with an RBI single up the middle, cutting the deficit to 3-1. NC State responded in the bottom half of the inning, stretching its lead to 4-1 on an infield single.

The Wolfpack added an insurance run in the sixth on a Cal error to make it 5-1.

Cal mounted a late rally in the seventh, beginning with a solo homer to deep center field from Anaya Togia. With two outs, Maddie Rey delivered a two-run double to pull the Bears within one and bring the tying run into scoring position, but Cal was unable to complete the comeback.

With the loss, the Bears fall to 13-29 overall and 3-14 in ACC play. Cal and NC State will close out the series Sunday evening at Dail Softball Stadium.
