BERKELEY -
In what can be called one of the most important matches in the history of California volleyball, senior setter Carli Lloyd calmly led the Golden Bears to a dominating four-set victory over a No. 2-ranked Stanford team, 26-28, 25-17, 25-17, 25-20, at Haas Pavilion, making the senior setter the California Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week.
Even as the Cardinal appeared to mount one final comeback bid, Lloyd powered through an injury to help secure Cal's program-best 14th league win. Lloyd's accuracy helped bring Cal one step closer to its first-ever Pac-10 championship and allowed the Bears to sweep the season-series against the Cardinal for the first time in 31 years. The Bonsall, Calif. native recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 56 assists and 13 digs. She averaged 14 assists in each set and distributed the ball to all of her hitters (three reached double-digit kills) as she led the Bears to an astronomic .359 hitting percentage against a Stanford squad that entered the match allowing opponents to average a .174 rate. The .359 mark is also the highest by a Cardinal opponent all season. Along the way, Lloyd became the 13th Cal player to cross the 1,000-dig plateau and is just the third setter to earn that achievement in school history as her 3.25 digs per set coupled with her four blocks to help hold the Cardinal to a season-low .205 hitting percentage. She also moved into sixth at Cal for all-time blocks (passing Lisa Arce, 364, 1987-90) during the match as she logged the 366th block of her career. She is the only setter to crack the program's top-ten list for blocks.
