No. 20 California Sweeps Pair from Oregon State

BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore pitcher Holly Yost tossed shutouts in both ends of a doubleheader, leading 20th-ranked Cal to 3-0 and 10-0 victories over Oregon State Sunday at Strawberry Field. Cal improves to 23-16 overall and 6-6 in the Pac-10, while OSU falls to 20-18-1 and 0-6.

In the first game, the Bears scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning. After shortstop Katie May singled and catcher Megumi Takasaki reached on an error, right fielder Kirsten Drake knocked in both runners with a double to left field. Drake then came around to score when Yost was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. On the mound, Yost allowed three hits and struck out nine, including four of the final five batters.

In the second game, Cal jumped on top with two runs in the first inning. Takasaki and Jenny Ackley singled and Melanie McCart doubled both runners home. The Bears added three more runs in the fourth inning, starting with a solo home run by Yost, her first of the year. Later, May doubled in two more runs.

In the fifth inning, the Bears scored twice on RBI singles by Yost and third baseman Jessica Parker.

Cal completed the scoring with three more runs in the sixth inning on five consecutive singles. The final blow was a two-run hit to left field by McCart. Yost allowed just two hits in picking up her 16th win of the season.

The Bears continue Pac-10 play at No. 3 UCLA Wednesday before hosting Stanford Saturday, April 12 at Strawberry Field.
