BERKELEY -
California softball player Lindsey Ziegenhirt has been selected to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-American Third Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. Ziegenhirt leads as one of three catchers from NCAA softball programs throughout the country selected to a Division I All-America team.
The senior is the first Golden Bear softball player to be selected to the national Academic All-American team since Emily Friedman in 2006. Ziegenhirt advanced to the national ballot after being named to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 First Team earlier this month. She was also named to the Academic All-District First Team in 2011.
Ziegenhirt was awarded her degree in psychology in this week's commencement ceremonies. She graduated with a team-leading 3.77 GPA, for which she received the Golden Bear award at Cal's Academic Honors Luncheon on May 7. She also received the Oscar Geballe post-graduate scholarship, which she plans to use toward her master's degree in education with the goal of becoming a high school teacher or principal.
Ziegenhirt is also in contention for All-America honors after being one of five Cal players named to the 2013 NFCA All-Pacific Region First Team. NFCA All-American selections will be announced on Wednesday, May 29.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better on a scale of 4.00, while playing as a varsity starter or key reserve. All nominees must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at her current institution and be nominated by her sports information director for consideration before opening the vote to CoSIDA members.
