3 Cal Coaches Selected to Team USA Staffs

BERKELEY – Golden Bear swimmers have been making themselves known on the international stage for many years, and Monday the people behind those accomplishments were recognized by USA Swimming when three of Cal’s coaches were named to national team staffs.

Men’s swimming & diving coach David Durden has been tabbed as head coach of the U.S. men’s team for the 2015 FINA World Championships that will be contested in Kazan, Russia, next Aug. 2-9. Also making the trip to Worlds will be women’s swimming & diving coach Teri McKeever, the 2012 Olympic head coach who will be an assistant for the U.S. women’s squad.

In addition, men’s assistant coach Yuri Suguiyama has been named an assistant for the American team at the World University Games set for July 4-11 in Gwangju, South Korea.

“Anytime you have been named a head coach of a USA National Team it is because of the accomplishments of the entirety of the staff, and the accomplishments of individual athletes who have helped you get to that position,” Durden said. “It is because of the hard work of so many people that I get to be recognized as the head coach.”

Earlier this fall, nearly two dozen Cal swimmers were named to U.S. teams that will swim in major international meets in 2015:
