Biography

Spring 2018: Closed out his Cal career at the NCAA Doubles Championship at Wake Forest; paired with Billy Griffith to fall to North Carolina’s second-seeded and second-ranked William Blumberg and Robert Kelly, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 32…ended with a 24-14 doubles record this season and with a career doubles record of 65-42…he posted a 23-13 doubles record with Griffith and a 1-1 record with Jacob Brumm this season…Nishimura was also 11-11 in singles as a senior and concluded his career with a 55-25 singles record…clinched the 4-1 win at Arizona in Cal’s Pac-12 opener on March 11, beating Trent Botha, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, at court-two singles…Nishimura and Griffith also clinched the doubles point in that Arizona match, as they defeated the Wildcats’ Igor Karpovets and Carlos Hassey, 6-3, on court one…the Cal veterans knocked off four opponents ranked in the final season poll, including Baylor’s 17th-ranked Will Little and Johannes Schretter (who were ranked No. 2 at the time) and Michigan’s 33rd-ranked Runhao Hua and Alex Knight (who were ranked ninth in that match)…in early March, Nishimura and Griffith reached the quarterfinals of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship.

Fall 2017: Was 12-6 in doubles and 5-2 in singles in his penultimate semester as a collegiate player…with fellow senior Billy Griffith earned a No. 52 ranking in the Oracle ITA doubles poll in November…they reached the doubles final at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, falling to Oregon’s 17th-ranked Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent, 6-2, 7-6(7)…the seniors posted an 11-5 doubles mark…the duo also competed in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships and Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships…paired with Jacob Brumm to go 1-1 in the Battle in the Bay Classic…Nishimura and Brumm claimed a No. 51 doubles ranking in the November Oracle ITA doubles poll.

Spring 2017: Posted a 13-6 singles record in dual matches after not playing singles in the fall…was 8-5 at court-five singles and 3-1 in Pac-12 dual matches…Nishimura clinched five Cal victories, including the Golden Bears’ 4-0 win over Tennessee Tech in the NCAA round of 64, as he beat Marc Mila, 6-1, 6-3, on court five…his other clinching wins came in the regular season against UCLA (he beat Austin Rapp, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4), Purdue [Athell Bennett, 7-6(3), 7-6(4)], Oklahoma (Arnaud Restifo, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4) and Utah (Joe Woolley, 6-3, 6-3)…Nishimura also compiled a season record of 13-11 in doubles, partnering with Bjorn Hoffmann the whole way…the duo was 10-10 on court three, 2-0 on court two and 4-1 in the Pac-12 in the spring…the two Bears beat Mila and Jorge Alfonzo, 6-1, in doubles in the NCAA win over Tennessee Tech in Berkeley…Nishimura has career records of  51-28 in singles and 50-29 in doubles.

Fall 2016: Partnering Bjorn Hoffman, reached the quarterfinals in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.

Spring 2016: Nishimura ended his sophomore season with a 21-9 singles record and 20-13 doubles mark…at No. 6 singles, he beat Michael Sienko, 6-2, 6-0, to clinch a 4-0 victory over Army West Point in the NCAA team round of 64 and defeated Zvonimir Babic, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch a 4-0 win over Mississippi in the NCAA round of 32 in Berkeley and send Cal to the round of 16 in Tulsa, Oklahoma…Nishimura teamed with Mads Engsted to win three out of five doubles matches during Cal’s run to the NCAA team semifinals…the pair clinched the doubles point against Army West Point, beating Grant Riechmann/David Mitchell, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles…the Bears then beat Ole Miss’ Babic/Ricardo Jorge, 6-2, to help Cal win the point…in what turned out to be a tight, 4-3 upset win for Cal over Ohio State in the NCAA quarterfinals, Nishimura and Engsted defeated Martin Joyce/Ralf Steinbach, 6-3, as the Bears took the doubles point…Nishimura also won twice in singles and with Engsted won twice in doubles as Cal beat Washington, 4-0, and USC, 4-1, to advance to the Pac-12 final for the first time…in the first round against the Huskies, the second-year Bear bageled Kawika Lam, 6-0, 6-0, and with Engsted beat Jake Douglas/Gal Hakak, 6-1, as Cal captured the doubles point…Nishimura then bested USC’s Laurens Verboven, 6-2, 6-4, and with Engsted defeated the Trojans’ Rob Bellamy/Jake DeVine, 6-3, in the Pac-12 semifinals…during the regular season, one of the highlights for Nishimura was in a 6-1 rout of UC Davis on April 13 in Berkeley, as he clinched the overall match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lam in singles and earlier with Billy Griffith clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Eli Whittle/James Wade at court three…posted a 21-9 singles record and 20-13 doubles record for the season.
 
Fall 2015: Nishimura beat Nevada's Ryan Andrada, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, to win the top-flight singles crown at the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis in early October…later in the fall, Nishimura won three times in singles to reach the round of 16 in the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships…his run included a round of 32 victory over Stanford’s Sameer Kumar, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3…Nishimura also teamed with Filip Bergevi to reach the doubles quarterfinals at the regional…the Bears beat Alec Adamson/James Wade, 8-3, of UC Davis in the regional round of 16.

Spring 2015: Nishimura posted records of 10-9 (singles) and 8-4 (doubles) in the spring; finished with season records of 17-13 (singles) and 17-5 (doubles)…posted a 7-1 doubles record with fellow freshman Billy Griffith…clinched Cal’s 5-2 win at Oregon with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 singles victory over Cormac Clissold on court five…played court-three singles twice, including during a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over Jakob Amilon in Cal’s 5-2 win over UNLV… in the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Berkeley, posted Cal’s first singles win – 6-0, 6-2 over Mate Cutura on court four – in a 4-2 win over No. 21 Mississippi State that clinched the Bears’ entry into the  ITA National Men’s Indoor Championships…partnered with Andre Goransson to win the consolation title at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship; the Bears upset the third-seeded pair of USC head coach Peter Smith and former Trojan Kaes Van’t Hof, 8-6.

Fall 2014: Won four times to reach the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships, then lost to Stanford’s David Hsu, 6-4, 6-2…lost to teammate Mads Engsted in the UCSB Classic semifinals, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2…won his first college singles match, beating Stanford’s Trey Strobel, 6-1, 7-6(2), in the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis…finished the fall with a 7-4 in singles record and an 8-1 doubles record…in doubles, Nishimura paired with Chase Melton to win the UCSB Classic final, 8-3, over the Gauchos’ Ziad Sultan/Tobias Galskov, 8-3…in the doubles at the regional, fell with Billy Griffith in the round of 32 to Stanford’s Robert Stineman/Yale Goldberg, 8-4.

Personal/Previous: Sociology major…won the singles title and fell in the doubles semifinals of the 2014 Monterey Bay Open…captured the doubles crown at the 2014 U.S. Open National Playoffs/Mixed Doubles Sectional Qualifying…won the singles and doubles championships at the 2014 NorCal Boys’ 18 and 16 Junior Sectional Championships and at the 2014 USTA May National Selection Tournament…earned USTA Boys 18 national ranking of No. 17…top-ranked NorCal Boys 18 player…winner of the 2014 Boys 18 NorCal Sectional singles and doubles titles…won eight national open junior championships…played high school basketball…parents are Landon and Jean Nishimura.
