SANTA CLARA, CALIF. - The No. 11 California women's volleyball team (9-1) defeated the No. 22 Santa Clara Broncos (7-4) in a 3-0 sweep (30-20, 30-19, 30-25) on Friday evening in the first of two weekend matches at the Leavey Center on the campus of Santa Clara University. With the win, Cal pushes their all-time series record against Santa Clara to 30-7.
With senior outside hitter Angie Pressey sitting out the match, junior outside hitter Am'ra Solomon got the start and led the Bears with four kills in the first game alone on 10 attempts. The Bears hit .406 in the first game and once again played strong defense, holding the Broncos to a .000 hitting percentage (10k, 10e, 37att). After a slow start, a 9-1 run opened up a 12-4 lead for Cal. Santa Clara fought back with a 5-0 run of their own before the Bears took control and finished off the first stanza of the three-game match.
The second game was more of the same for the Bears, holding the Broncos to a -.094 hitting percentage. Through the second game, the Bears had put up 11 total team blocks to Santa Clara's one. Sophomore outside hitter Hana Cutura put in her share of blocks, racking up three block solos for a new career high and matching her old career high in total blocks with six. Cutura also put down nine kills (1e, 15att, .533) to go along with her eight digs.
Redshirt sophomore middle hitter Kat Reilly continued to put up impressive numbers at the net, racking up five blocks on the day and adding 10 kills to lead the team, while hitting a scorching .909, committing no errors in 11 attempts. Reilly currently leads the Pac-10 in blocks, turning away opponent attacks with a 2.24 blocks per game average. As a team, the Bears finished out the match out-blocking the Broncos by a margin of 15 to two and held Santa Clara to a .048 hitting percentage over the three games.
The Bears will take on Notre Dame tomorrow in a 4:30 p.m. match hosted by Santa Clara. The match will be the last for the Bears before Pac-10 play begins at Haas Pavilion on Sept. 21 against rival Stanford. The Big Spike will be featured on a live broadcast by Comcast.
