BERKELEY - The No. 1 California softball team cruised to an 8-0 five-inning win over Sac State on Wednesday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field. Owning a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third, the Golden Bears doubled their scoring output en route to the mercy win, improving to 30-1 while the Hornets drop to 17-10.
Valerie Arioto pitched the five-inning victory, moving her record to 14-0. Arioto gave up just three hits while striking out six.
Shelby Voelz (4-2) merited the start and lasted two full innings, in which she allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks. Caitlin Brooks pitched the final two innings, giving up four earned runs on as many hits and two walks.
Bottom of the First - Sac State 0, Cal 1:
Valerie Arioto flied out in foul territory, plating Jamia Reid, who reached on an errant throw to first on a dropped third strike.
Bottom of the Second - Sac State 0, Cal 4:
Elia Reid, Frani Echavarria, Jamia Reid and Britt Vonk strung together four consecutive hits to plate three runs with both Reids and Echavarria all scoring and Jamia Reid and Britt Vonk tallying RBI.
Bottom of the Third - Sac State 0, Cal 8:
After Breana Kostreba singled to center, Cheyenne Cordes and Elia Reid worked Brooks for 13- and 10-pitch walks, respectively, to load the bases. With a single, Echavarria plated Kostreba while Cordes came around on the throw in from center. Jamia Reid scored her sister with a grounder fielder's choice to short and Britt Vonk plated Echavarria with a ground out to third.
