Starr, Manasse Win All-American Title

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Twenty years ago, California's Amanda Augustus celebrated her own doubles title at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. On Sunday, the now Golden Bear head coach celebrated another championship at the All-American when Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr captured Cal's third overall doubles crown at the Riviera Tennis Club.

Seeded second at the All-American and ranked third nationally, the pair of Starr and Manasse defeated North Carolina's 15th-ranked Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay, 6-1, 6-4, in the final.

It was Cal's first All-American doubles title since Augustus and Renata Kolbovic won it in 1995. Pam Nelson and Keirsten Alley captured the crown for Cal in 1993.

"I'm really proud of them," Augustus said of her protégés. "They're a team that's been working and building, and they've been getting better and better in national events. I'm just really proud of their development as a doubles team. I'm really happy for the program. Winning national championships is a big part of what we do.

"I'm really happy that the next generation of Bears can come home with the really cool trophy they give at this tournament; it kind of looks like an Oscar. It'll be a trophy to remember for them, to be sure. They also have a perpetual trophy -  a really big trophy - that they engrave the champions' and finalists' names on. To have Maegan and Denise become a part of history in that way is a tremendous honor."

"It feels amazing," Starr said. "It feels really good to win a tournament in general, but it's even better winning it in doubles. I think we complement each other really well, and it's even more satisfying to win in doubles because you get to work together."

"It's great," said Manasse, who also reached the main draw singles semifinals on Saturday. "Playing with Denise, it's like a whole different tournament. I lost in singles yesterday, but I still had to play doubles, so I focused on that and focused on making sure nothing affected me in doubles. We have so much fun together on the court. We play great together, and it's so much fun."

In the final, Manasse and Starr were playing a UNC pair that lost just three times last season and reached the quarterfinals of this year's Oracle/ITA Masters, which represented the first collegiate national championships of the season.

The two Bears had a strong season themselves in 2014-15, which culminated in them reaching the NCAA doubles round of 16. This year, the duo reached the semifinals of the Oracle/ITA Masters.

"They served very well," Augustus said of the Bears' Sunday performance. "Denise and Maegan probably volleyed the best all tournament in this match. They moved a lot at the net and were very strategically smart about their placement of their volleys and their returns, so they were not allowing the North Carolina team to pull them off the net. We've been working on pieces of what they did in the final for a long time, so it was just really nice to see them put it together. And they really maintained their focus in the second set when North Carolina started to push and make a little bit of a run."

The Bears also earned a berth to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships held next month in New York by reaching the All-American doubles final.

"After a long, hot week here in Pacific Palisades, this just shows they're on track with their fitness," Augustus added. "We'll go home and keep working. Now they've also qualified for indoors. But it's nice to end the week with a win."
