INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Twenty eighth-ranked California cruised past No. 20 Tulsa, 4-0, on Sunday to capture the consolation final of the BNP Paribas Collegiate Challenge presented by Oracle at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Golden Bears (11-5) did not lose a point in its final two matches – including a 5-0 win over Purdue on Saturday – at the second annual tournament.
Senior Gregory Bayane clinched the victory for the Bears with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Matthew Kirby at court-four singles.
“Our guys came out and played with a purpose today,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “Our doubles matches were all played with focus and intent, and that attitude carried over into the singles. It was a positive performance in terms of the progress our team is making in being more focused on taking advantage of every opportunity that presents itself.”
In doubles, the pair of sophomore Filip Bergevi and junior Mads Engsted bageled and upset the 53rd-ranked team of Carlos Bautista and Alejandro Espejo, 6-0, on court two. The freshman duo of J.T. Nishimura and Billy Griffith – playing at court-three doubles for the second straight match – then clinched the doubles point with an almost as dominant win, 6-1, over Juan Matias Gonzalez and Mitchell Pritchard.
Andre Goransson got the Bears off on the right foot in singles, as the 67th-ranked sophomore lost just one game in upsetting the 37th-ranked Or-Ram Harel, 6-1, 6-0, on court one. Junior Oskar Wikberg followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Mitchell Pritchard on court five to make the score 3-0, leaving Bayane to secure the overall win.
Cal returns to the friendly confines of the Hellman Tennis Complex when it hosts three matches this week, starting with a nonconference tilt against Nevada on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The Bears return to Pac-12 play when they take on Arizona on Friday at 3 p.m. and then play Utah on Saturday at 1 p.m.
