EUGENE – California had no problem posting an early score in each of its three contests against Oregon over the weekend, but struggled to use the momentum down the stretch.
On Sunday, in game 3 of the opening Pac-12 series, the No. 23 Golden Bears (17-8) managed to score a run in the top of the first and fourth innings, but could not find their bearings defensively to limit the No. 3 and still undefeated Ducks (27-0) giving up a run-rule 10-2 win.
Jazmyn Jackson found home for the first time this weekend after reaching on a fielder's choice. She stole second and then found the plate on an Oregon fielding error in the first.
Kobie Pettis nabbed her second run of the weekend in the top of the fourth after singling to get on base. She made her way home after advancing on a ground out and then a RBI single from freshman
Bradie Fillmore to complete the journey.
Unfortunately for the Bears, the Ducks made the most of their at-bats and scored multiple runs in three consecutive half-innings to take, keep and extend their lead. Oregon brought three home in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth inning. The reigning conference champs solidified the five-inning win on sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to bring their lead runner in for the 10th run.
Cal struggled in the circle Sunday giving up eight walks.
The Bears next outing pits them against in-state foe Sacramento State at the home of the Hornets on March 22 at 4 p.m. (PT).
