Bears Drop Slugfest

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Another big inning proved decisive for the Cal baseball team as host Utah plated 11 runs in the second inning to take command and the Bears dropped a 16-8 decision in the second of three games at Smith's Ballpark.

After spotting Utah a run in the bottom of the first inning, Cal (15-17, 7-7 Pac-12) surged ahead with an eventful top of the second. An RBI single by Jonah Davis brought the score back to even and, with the bases loaded, freshman Cameron Eden pushed the go-ahead run across by drawing a bases-loaded walk.

Sophomore Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr. capped the scoring by beating out a chopper to third base but a fly out ended the inning with the bases still full of Bears and Cal leading 3-1. Limiting the damage gave Utah (14-16, 5-9) a little momentum back and the Utes took full advantage in the bottom of the inning by sending 16 men to the plate in an error-plagued frame for the Bears. 11 runs scored and Utah owned a commanding 12-3 lead.

The Bears showed their resilience in the fourth and turned a patient approach into three more runs. One hit batter, three walks a wild pitch and a passed ball combined to bring Cal a bit closer and chased Utah starter Riley Ottesen in the process, leaving the Bears down by six after three and a half innings that took nearly two hours to complete.

Andrew Vaughn brought Cal closer still in the sixth, narrowly missing a home run as he drilled a shot off the top of the wall in right-center field to bring home two more runs. Utah tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the inning to quell Cal's momentum and added another in the seventh to pull further ahead. The Utes collected nine extra-base hits on the day, led by two triples from Dashawn Keirsey, Jr.

Mitchell, Tanner Dodson and Matt Ruff each collected two hits for the Bears to lead the offense. Cal and Utah conclude their series on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. (PT) from Salt Lake City. The Bears will return to the Bay Area for four games next week, beginning with a Tuesday evening trip to Sunken Diamond for the second of two non-conference meetings with Stanford this season. First pitch is set for 5:35 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks. Cal comes home to Evans Diamond next weekend to face USC.
