FRISCO, Texas – Early offense from No. 11-ranked Texas A&M left the Cal baseball team chasing a deficit and the Bears could never recover as they dropped a 9-5 decision to the Aggies in the final game of three at the Frisco Classic at Dr. Pepper Ballpark.
Â
Playing under ominous gray skies on its last day in Frisco, Cal (6-4) jumped out to another early lead thanks to more offensive theatrics from reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week
Jonah Davis. Already the owner of an opposite field home run during the trip to Texas, Davis launched another big fly, this time to left-center, to put the Bears ahead 2-0 in the second inning.
Â
Texas A&M had its response ready, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Chris Andritsos and an RBI single by George Janca. The Aggies added two runs in the third, two more in the fourth and held a 7-2 lead by the midway point of the game.
Â
Cal couldn't find an offensive rhythm after Davis' home run as Texas A&M starter Mitchell Kilkenny worked seven strong to earn the win for the Aggies. Quality late relief helped keep the Bears in the game as
Arman Sabouri pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings and all-tournament selection
Tanner Dodson struck out the side in his first inning before the Texas A&M finished its coring off with two runs (one earned) in the eighth.
Â
Freshman
Sam Wezniak provided the final offensive blow of the day for the Bears, belting a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning Davis finished a tremendous weekend in Texas with another good game at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI. He ended the weekend 6 for 11 with two home runs, a double, three walks, four runs scored and five RBI and was named to the all-tournament team.
