Martinez Wins Pac-12 Championship On Day 1
Martinez Set A School Record And Claimed The Pac-12 Title In The Pole Vault
STANFORD, Calif. – California track & field claimed one individual title on the first day of competition at the Pac-12 Championship on Saturday. Freshman stood out for the Bears on both the men's and women's sides as they competed against the rest of the conference at Cobb Track & Angell Field.
Lauren Martinez won the Pac-12 pole vault championship while setting a school record as she cleared 14-0.0 feet. Martinez cleared the height on her first attempt as she missed one bar on her first seven attempts. That clearance also ties her for 13
th in the country this year. She previously sat second in school history with a personal best of 13-10.5, but bettered that today by posting the 13
th best mark in the country and passing Katie Morgan (13-11.75) in the school record book.
The men's shot put group showcased their depth and talent as they added 21 points to the team total.
McKay Johnson took second place with a throw of 64-5.75. Johnson led the competition for the first four rotations before Arizona's Jordan Geist outdistanced his throw in round five.
Peter Simon, the reigning champion in the event, finished third with a throw of 62-1.00.
Malik McMorris took sixth as he had a throw of 56-9.25 while freshman
Joshua Johnson rounded out the group with a seventh-place mark of 55-5.00.
After the first day of competition the men's team sits in fourth place with 29 points from six scored events. The women's squad has compiled 23 points from the first nine events and will enter the second day in seventh position.
Freshman
Camryn Rogers started the championship by taking third in the women's hammer throw competition. She threw 210-9 on her fourth attempt. She had previously secured a spot in the finals with a throw of 210-0 on her third attempt as that mark also would have finished in third.
Destiny Parker also scored for the Bears as the senior took eighth. Her first throw travelled 186-11 and was one of four attempts over 186-6 feet.
Takeshi Okada posted a fantastic performance out of the slower heat. He notched a time of 8:53.80 as he ran away with the first heat. That mark stood up as the second heat ran slowly and Okada finished in third place overall.
Charles Sherman took second in the first heat behind Okada and finished ninth overall with a personal best time of 9:11.27.
Sanjay Kettels took fifth place in the men's long jump with a season-best leap of 24-3.75. Kettels recorded the mark on his third attempt after fouling the first two. Needing to post a mark, the freshman did more than that as he posted a mark that would win the first flight of the competition.
Garrett Corcoran advanced to the finals of the 1500m with a time of 3:47.53. Corcoran finished sixth in his heat with the top five receiving automatic bids into the next round. The top six runners all finished with four-tenths of a second of each other. Corcoran notched the 11
th overall spot and will move on to the final at 3:22 p.m. tomorrow.
John Hogan just missed the cut as he finished in 3:48.93 and took 14
th.
Parmveer Chohan advanced to tomorrow's final with a time of 51.92. Chohan set a personal best as he outleaned a Washington State runner for third place in his heat and fifth overall.
Freshman
Noelle Schiller notched a new personal best and just missed Cal's all-time top 10 list with a leap of 20-1.75. She fell ¾ of an inch from cracking the school's all-time top 10 list as she took fifth in the competition and earned four points for the Bears. She would have set a freshman record in the event, but the mark was wind-aided as she jumped with a 2.5 m/s wind just over the 2.0 m/s mark to make it legal.
Jenna Mencarelli set a personal best in the 400m with a time of 56.09 and
Windy Margerum also set a new personal collegiate standard as she leapt 18-10.00 in the long jump.
The Bears will return to action tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. for the men's hammer throw competition. The running events begin at 3 p.m. at Cobb Track & Angell Field.
