Olivia Hauger clinched a Cal win for the second time in the past five days.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Olivia Hauger clinched victory for the second time in five days as California defeated Arizona State, 4-1, in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Sunday at South Carolina's Carolina Tennis Center. The California senior, ranked 35th, beat Tereza Kolarova at court-three singles to wrap up a 2-1 week for the Bears.
Cal (2-1) also got singles wins from
Maria Smith,
Hana Mraz and
Anna Bright against the Sun Devils (3-2). ASU had earlier won the doubles point.
The Bears' week included a 4-3 comeback win at No. 11 Florida on Jan. 23 and a 4-1 loss at No. 14 South Carolina in Saturday's Kick-Off Weekend opener.
While the Cal pair of
Hana Mraz and
Katerina Stloukalova won its second match of the weekend – a 6-2 result over the Sun Devils' Savannah Slaysman and Samantha Alicea – ASU captured the doubles point with wins on courts three and one. The Sun Devils clinched on one, with their eighth-ranked Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh topping Cal's 17th-ranked
Anna Bright and
Jasie Dunk, 7-5.
The Bears came out stronger in singles, winning four of six first sets. Senior
Maria Smith quickly tied the overall match at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Julie Fisch on court five, with Mraz soon following with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Grace Koester on court six. After the 57th-ranked
Anna Bright lifted Cal to a 3-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Slaysman on three, Hauger wrapped up the day on court two.
"In a season every match is important, and we're just glad to have the opportunity to come back out today and compete again," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "We did a good job in our singles play, but the takewaway from the weekend is to come home and work on our doubles. Getting a victory over another perennial top 25 Pac-12 team is always a good thing. We stayed focused quite well in the singles today.
"Hana did a really good job she won her doubles and her singles. Everyone was still out there competing in singles when we clinched. That's what you want. Coming away with two good wins on our first road trip of the season is great for this team. As we keep competing and getting better, I'm excited to see what we're going to look like later this season."
Cal play its next matches on the road at Pepperdine on Feb. 1 and at San Diego State on Feb. 2.
