SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Cal men's tennis had a strong start to the UCSB Classic on Friday, as Dominic Barretto, Thomas Wright and Mert Zincirli combined to go four for four on the first day of the Gauchos' annual tournament. All three Bears won in singles, and the pair of Wright and Zincirli won its doubles opener.
 
In the A singles round of 16, Barretto beat Stanford's Filip Kolasinski, 7-6(4), 6-3, and Zincirli defeated UCLA's Eric Hahn, 6-2, 6-3. Wright, playing in the C flight round of 16, topped LMU's Ryan Brown, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
 
Zincirli and Wright, in the B doubles quarterfinals, posted a convincing 8-1 win over UCLA's Hahn and Mathew Tsolakyan.
 
The tournament ends on Sunday.
 
TULSA, Okla. – About 1,500 miles to the east, the Bears bowed out of the ITA All-American Championships, as Yuta Kikuchi fell in singles and the pair of Kikuchi and Jacob Brumm lost in doubles on Friday.
 
Kikuchi, ranked 75th, dropped a 6-4, 6-2 result to UC Santa Barbara's Joseph Guillin in the consolation singles round of 16. Later Thursday, he teamed with Brumm in the consolation doubles quarterfinals, with the Golden Bears losing a tight match to Radford's Rodrigo Magalhaes and Yevhen Sirous, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0(8).
