BERKELEY - The California men's soccer team battled seventh-ranked in a relatively even match, but the Golden Bears couldn't overcome a 30th-minute Huskies' goal and eventually lost, 1-0, on Sunday at Edwards Stadium in a game broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
The Bears' outshot UW, 12-11, and had an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks. But at 29:18, Cal goalkeeperÂ
Drake Callender saved a close-range shot by Joey Parish and then made another save on a shot in the box by UW's Christian Soto. The Bears couldn't clear the ball, and the Huskies finally beat Callender when Blake Bodily scored.
Â
The Bears' last best chance to score came at 88:05, when midfielder
Francisco Perez hit a curving shot in front of goal that UW keeper Sam Fowler parried away.
"It was a hard-fought game both ways," Cal head coach
Kevin Grimes said. "Give them credit for scoring the goal. We just couldn't find the back of the net today. We had a high shot count, a high corner-kick count, but it just didn't happen for us. It's time to move on to the next one."
Cal's record now stands at 5-3-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the Pac-12 Conference. UW has a 10-1-0 record (4-0-0 Pac-12).
Â
The Bears continue Pac-12 play when they travel to San Diego State for a game on Thursday at 7 p.m. and to UCLA for a game on Oct. 13 at 4 p.m., with the game against the Bruins televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
