BERKELEY – Cal took another top-10 team to the limit at the Hellman Tennis Complex, but the No. 19/24 Golden Bears came away with another 4-3 loss this time to No. 5 UCLA on Saturday. The Bruins clinched the match when Abi Altick edged Cal's 69th-ranked Anna Bright, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), at court-four singles.

After the nonconference match, the Bears' record fell to 4-3, while the Bruins improved to 7-1.

Cal did win the doubles point for the third time in four matches, as the 28th-ranked pair of Hana Mraz and Julia Rosenqvist upset UCLA's eighth-ranked team of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield, 7-6(3), to clinch on court one. The Bears' 23rd-ranked Bright and Jasie Dunk also upset UCLA's 14th-ranked Jada Hart and Elysia Bolton, 6-2, on court two.

The Bruins took a 2-1 lead in singles with wins by Alaina Miller and the 11th-ranked Bolton on courts five and two, respectively. But Cal knotted the match at 2-2 when Mraz beat Taylor Johnson, 6-3, 6-4, on court six.

Rosenqvist, ranked 45th, had been on fire of late in singles, having won four straight – including an upset of Vanderbilt's third-ranked Fernanda Contreras on Friday. But Hart upset the Cal star, 6-4, 6-3, on court one to give the Bruins a 3-2 lead.

Fiery Cal junior Katerina Stloukalova then knocked off her second ranked opponent in two days when she beat the 112th-ranked Broomfield, 6-3, 7-5, on court three to tie things at 3-3 – until Altick clinched the win for UCLA.

"We played much better doubles today, and I was really impressed with how we adjusted today and really stepped it up in the doubles," said Cal head coach Amanda Augustus. "It was super tight, and we were able to come through. This is a top-10 team – you have to really battle against them in doubles and singles, and I thought we did.

"In singles, it came down to a couple of points, so I'm really proud of our effort. We got better today as a team, even from yesterday. We have one more opportunity to play tomorrow, and I'm excited to continue our progress. We settled into playing at Hellman again today, and we had fantastic crowd support again. We had some good wins today – Hana had a great win and Kate had a great win. There was a whole lot of good out here today, and I'm just proud of how this team, early in the season, competes together really hard. Hopefully the fans appreciate that and come out again and support us tomorrow."

The Bears next host No. 17 USC in a nonconference match on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Hellman. Sunday's match will be Cal's third in three days against a top 20 opponent at Hellman, including a 4-3 loss to No. 6/7 Vanderbilt on Friday.
