Hana Mraz clinched the overall win and (with Julia Rosenqvist) the doubles point against ASU.
BERKELEY - Fourteenth-ranked Cal knocked off Arizona State, 5-2, on Saturday to remain unbeaten in the Pac-12 Conference and run its winning streak to four matches.
Hana Mraz clinched the overall victory and paired with
Julia Rosenqvist to clinch the doubles point on a sunny day at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Mraz, a sophomore, defeated Savannah Slaysman, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, in singles to secure the win. Earlier, the 26th-ranked pair of Rosenqvist and Mraz upset the sixth-ranked Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh, 6-2, at court-one doubles.
Cal is now 8-3 and 3-0 in the Pac-12. The Sun Devils fell to 5-8 (0-4 Pac-12).
The Golden Bears took the 1-0 lead into singles and doubled it when the 25th-ranked
Julia Rosenqvist defeated Hattingh, 6-4, 6-3, on court one. The 74th-ranked
Anna Bright followed with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 win over Tereza Kolarova on court three. After Mraz clinched the win on court five, Cal sophomore
Alexis Nelson won on court six after ASU's Samantha Alicea retired with an injury while trailing 6-3, 4-6, 2-0, to give Cal a 5-0 lead. The Sun Devils won the last two matches to make the final score 5-2.
"I was really pleased with our play in doubles today," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "We knew Arizona State is always tough in doubles. We did a good job of coming out aggressive and being ready to make adjustments against them on all three courts. It was a really good win for Julia and Hana against a highly ranked opponent. We got ourselves off to a really good start with that doubles point, and we won five of six first sets in singles, too."
Including Friday's 7-0 shutout of the Wildcats at Hellman, the Bears swept the Arizona schools to improve their home record to 3-2.
"On back to back days, we kept our momentum up well," Augustus said. "We have a few things to work on to prepare for next week. But we did a really good job against a tough team, and I was pleased to come away with another Pac-12 victory today."
Cal returns to Hellman to host Hawaii on March 23 at 12 p.m.
