Bears Open Outdoor Season With 21 Individual Victories
Johnson, Foster And Wise Record All-Time Top 10 Marks
BERKELEY – The California track & field team opened the outdoor season on Saturday by hosting the California Outdoor Opener at Edwards Stadium. With foggy skies and intermittent rain presenting an ominous look, the results were anything but for the Bears in their opener.
Â
Cal set three mark in the school's all-time top 10 and came away with 21 victories on Saturday.
Joshua Johnson moved into 10
th place on the school's all-time list as he threw 18.44m/60-6.00 to surpass the 60-foot barrier for the first time in his career. The sophomore moved past newly inducted Cal Hall of Famer Ramon Jimenez Gaona who sat in 10
th place with a mark of 60-1.00, which he set in 1992.
Â
The Bears received top-10 performances in both the men's and women's hurdle events. On the men's side,
Jasher Foster ran 13.82 in the 110m hurdles to move into ninth on the school's all-time list. He past Carl Florant and Pat Duffy in school history. On the women's side,
Deshae Wise ran 13.69 to move to fifth place. Wise came into the season tied for eighth on the list with a personal best of 13.94. She bettered that on Saturday afternoon. Both Wise and Foster won their events.
Â
Rather than opening the season with the grueling 3000m steeplechase, Cal eased into the competition this year and offered the 2000m steeplechase as an event. It worked out well, as both
Annie Boos and
Takeshi Okada won the event and set school records. Coming off NCAA regional qualifying marks in the 3000m steeplechase last year, both Boos and Okada adjusted to running a shorter distance. Boos ran 6:51.10 to win the women's race while Okada ran 5:41.89 and won the men's race. .
Â
Iffy Joyner opened the season with a discus mark that would have made NCAA Regionals last year. The sophomore threw 55.83m/183-2 to win the discus competition. The mark bettered Joyner's personal best by nearly 10 feet. He also set a personal best as he took second in the shot put with a mark of 57-1.50.
Â
Sophomore
Noelle Schiller continued her success from indoor season as she won the long jump competition with a personal best of 6.08m/19-11.50, a mark just three inches from cracking the school's all-time top 10.
Â
Redshirt Senior
Garrett Corcoran led a trio of Bears who set personal bests in the 1500m. Corcoran won the race in 3:44.73 while
Andrew Burkhardt won a sprint to the finish line to take second in 3:48.57.
Ben Harper also recorded a personal best as he crossed the line in 3:54.77.
Â
Diab Davis had a career day in the 100m as he ran 10.56 to win the competition. Davis' bettered his previous best of 10.67, which he set last year.
Benjamin Micallef won the 800m in a time of 1:53.77 while
Connor Meech claimed the 400m hurdle title with a time of 54.52.
Jalyn Jackson (triple jump) and
Jack Phillips (high jump) both won their events.
Â
On the women's side,
Maisie Stevens opened her outdoor career with a mark of 11.85 and a victory.
Zion Corrales Nelson won both the 200m and the 400m as she carded times of 24.25 and 56.73, respectively.
Jessica Nye won the 1500m with a time of 4:39.74 and
Schantell Williams won the 400m hurdles in 1:03.28.
Francesca Macias claimed the javelin for the Bears.
Â
Cal also won the 4x100m relay on the women's side as Wise, Corrales Nelson, Stevens and
Jackie Patterson ran 45.37. That mark was the best time the Bears have recorded since 2013. The men's 4x400m relay of Meech, Foster, Micallef and
Nicolas Bland ran 3:19.51 to earn the victory as well.
Â
Three Bears will conclude the NCAA Indoor season next week as
McKay Johnson,
Tuomas Kaukolahti and
Tyler Brendel head to Birmingham, Alabama to compete against the nation's best. The rest of the team will return to action as they continue the outdoor season on March 15-16 at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento.
