Lee's Four RBI Lead Cal Over Sacramento State

Bears Pay Back Hornets For A Loss Earlier This Season

BERKELEY – Nothing like a little revenge to add spice to an otherwise routine non-conference game on the schedule.

Having been shut out by Sacramento State four weeks ago, the Cal baseball team turned the tables and pounded the Hornets 12-4 on Tuesday night at Evans Diamond.

The Bears (21-14) knocked out 16 hits to tie their season high. Korey Lee continued an outstanding season at the plate with a home run and four RBI. And seven pitchers – the majority freshmen who haven't been used much lately – limited Sacramento State (26-14) to eight hits and made sure the visitors never got within striking distance.

Cal was shut out 6-0 at John Smith Field back on March 26, an all-around flat performance where the Bears mustered just four hits. But they've looked like a different team since then, and they weren't about to get caught off-guard by Sacramento State this time around.

"That was really a tough loss when we went on the road there," Cal head coach Mike Neu said. "We were able to win eight straight after that. And honestly, I felt like that kind of got us going, realizing how important every game is."

Cal jumped on Sacramento State starter Travis Adams right away, striking for six runs in the first and batting around. Max Flower hit a two-run homer to the opposite field to key the rally. Lee, who went 3-for-5 and is now hitting .338, smoked a two-run shot in the fourth that hit high off the concrete facing that sits beyond the left field wall.

It was the 10th homer for Lee, a junior who normally catches but served as designated hitter Tuesday. He's got a team-high 39 RBI, sixth-most in the Pac-12.

Andrew Vaughn went 3-for-3 with three runs, an RBI and two walks (one intentional).

There were several noteworthy performances on the mound. Sean Sullivan started and threw a scoreless inning. Lucas Gather (2-0) followed with two innings to pick up the victory. Nick Proctor put runners on second and third with no outs but escaped a jam in the fourth.

Jack Delmore delivered two innings with just an unearned run. Mitchell Scott tossed a scoreless inning. In his Cal debut, sophomore lefty Connor Oswalt allowed a homer but struck out two, and Jack Hinrichsen polished things off in the ninth. All but Delmore and Oswalt are freshmen.

"We probably have the most freshmen pitchers that Cal baseball maybe has ever had," Neu said. "Sometimes you can go a couple weeks without an opportunity. For these guys to go out there and  pitch the way they did, I thought  it was a tremendous job."
