BERKELEY - Simon Lekressner scored in his second straight game to record the gamewinner and
Tommy Williamson scored in his third straight as California defeated American, 2-0, on a warm Friday evening at Edwards Stadium.
Cal's offensive onslaught resulted in 31 shots, to three for American, with the Golden Bears forcing Eagles goalkeeper Jake Agnew to make nine saves. Cal senior goalkeeper
Drake Callender made two saves, both in the first half.
The Bears improved to 3-0-1, while American fell to 0-4-1 after the nonconference affair.
"It was a game we played really well for the majority of the match," Cal head coach
Kevin Grimes said. "We certainly created a lot of chances. We'd hoped to maybe score a goal or two more, but that wasn't in the cards today. Soccer's a game where it's not about the amount of chances but what you do with your chances."
Lekressner's second goal of the season came in the 16th minute. On the third of Cal's eight corner kicks on the day, midfielder
Taylor Davila's driven ball found the senior defender, who nodded the ball past Agnew to give Cal a 1-0 lead.
Â
Cal outshot the Eagles, 15-3, in the first half, and ultimately took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Â
While American had its share of possession late in the first 45 minutes, Cal truly dominated the second half, when it outshot the Eagles, 16-0.
Â
In the 63rd minute, Williamson, a forward, took a short pass from midfielder
Francisco Perez and fired a rocket past Agnew from 10 yards out to make the score 2-0.
Â
"Francisco had an awesome game," Williamson said. "He was dribbling down the flank, and I saw him look for his shot. But I was in the middle, and he gave a nice layoff to me, and I just put it in the corner."
Â
Williamson now leads Cal with six points from a team-high three goals, including a strike in the Bears' 3-0 win at UC Santa Barbara and his first goal in a 1-1 tie with UC Irvine.
Â
Cal returns to Edwards Stadium on Sunday at 12 p.m. to host Denver, in a game broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network and on Pac-12 Bay Area.
