Bears Battle On At Meadowood
ST. HELENA, Calif. – Cal men's tennis senior
Bjorn Hoffmann and junior
Jack Molloy won again Saturday in the Audi Napa Valley Tennis Classic and moved closer to earning spots in Sunday's Solinco Wild Card Shootout. Hoffmann defeated Baylor's Constantin Frantzen, 6-1, 6-4, to improve to 2-0 in group 7, while Molloy beat Michigan's Andrew Fenty – who was ranked 56th to end the 2018-19 season – 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-2, to improve to 2-0 in group 2 at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort.
The winners of the eight singles groups will advance to the shootout, with the champion earning wild-card entry into a future pro circuit tournament.
Also in singles on Saturday, Cal's
Yuta Kikuchi topped Harvard's Henry von der Schulenburg, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, to go 1-1 in group 3, and
Dominic Barretto (1-1 in group 5) beat Michigan's Connor Johnston, 7-5, 6-3. But Golden Bears junior
Paul Barretto (1-1 in group 1) fell to Damon Kesaris of Saint Mary's, 6-3, 7-5,
Can Kaya (1-1 in group 8) lost to Pacific's Ross Watson, 6-4, 6-4, and
Mert Zincirli (0-2 in group 6) lost to Michigan's Nick Beaty, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
The Bears played just one doubles match on Saturday, with Kaya and Hoffmann besting Michigan's Beaty and Mattias Siimar, 6-4.
The tournament ends on Sunday.
