Cal Blanks UCSB 3-0

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Alonzo Del Mundo assisted on all three goals in California's 3-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night at Harder Stadium. The Golden Bears and Del Mundo had a masterful performance, especially in the first half, to topple the Gauchos and improve their record to 2-0-1.

Cal is now 7-1 against UCSB under head coach Kevin Grimes.

The Gauchos fell to 1-2-0 after the nonconference result. Traditionally a difficult team to beat at home – UCSB was 9-0-1 at home last season – the Gauchos have lost two straight at Harder Stadium.

"Anytime you face an excellent opponent, you have to be at your best to get a result," Grimes said. "We did that tonight against a quality team in a tough environment."

The Bears scored just 45 seconds into the game, as Del Mundo crossed the ball into the Gauchos' six-yard box, and freshman forward Arman Samimi ran across the face of the goal to disrupt the UCSB defense and goalkeeper Ben Roach. Samimi got a touch on the ball, which senior defender Simon Lekressner collected and then fired past the stunned Gauchos to give Cal the 1-0 lead.

The Del Mundo to Samimi connection worked again in the 14th minute, as this time Samimi tapped in another dangerous cross to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.

Cal turned away two good UCSB chances in the 17th minute, as first Drake Callender – back early from U.S. U-23 training camp – saved Will Baynham's shot and then defender Ian Lonergan headed Carter Clemmensen's follow-up shot off the line.

Del Mundo struck again in the 39th minute, this time from a corner kick, as junior forward Tommy Williamson headed in his second goal in as many games from 10 yards out, and Cal led 3-0.

In the second half, UCSB threw most of their players forward searching for goals that never came. That left some openings in their defense, including in the 83rd minute, with Williamson trying to chip Roach in a 1-v-1 with the keeper in the box. But Roach made the save.

The Bears return to the cozy confines of Edwards Stadium when they host American on Friday, Sept. 13, and then host Denver on Sunday, Sept. 15.
