Cal To Host Two Dual Meets, Senior Day This Weekend

BERKELEY – California men's swimming and diving will host a pair of Pac-12 Conference foes in its final two home meets of the 2019-20 season this weekend at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
 
The Bears will clash with eighth-ranked Arizona at 2 p.m. (PT) on Friday and No. 12 Arizona State at noon (PT) on Saturday. Both meets will feature each school's men's and women's programs. All diving competitions will be held at Legends Aquatic Center on both days. Admission to both meets is free. Results for both dual meets can be found on CalBears.com at the conclusion of each day.
 
THANK YOU, SENIORS!
Nine senior Bears will be competing in their final two home meets this weekend and will be honored prior to Saturday's events. The nine-man class – Karl Arvidsson, Connor Callahan, Shane Forker, Michael Jensen, Zheng Wen Quah, Pawel Sendyk, Andy Song, Jack Xie and Ethan Young – has helped Cal to one NCAA team title (2019), two NCAA runner-up finishes, four school records and nine total Pac-12 All-Academic Team selections.
 
ABOUT ARIZONA
The Wildcats are ranked eighth nationally in the latest CSCAA Coaches Poll (Dec. 11) and have won all five of their dual meets during the 2019-20 season. Arizona most recently posted a 199-154 victory over Northwestern on Jan. 2-3 and also owns Pac-12 dual victories over Utah and USC in the fall. Cal caught a glimpse of the Wildcats at the midseason Minnesota Invitational in December, where they finished fourth overall.
 
ABOUT ARIZONA STATE
Twelfth-ranked Arizona State will visit Berkeley in the thick of a busy month of January. The Sun Devils bested Northwestern on Jan. 4 and will challenge Stanford on Friday prior to taking on the Bears on Saturday. Their month concludes by hosting Texas on Jan. 31 in Tempe. Arizona State posted two Pac-12 dual victories over Utah and USC before taking second place at the NC State GAC Invitational in the fall.
 
WINTER TRAINING TRIP
The Bears ushered in the New Year at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., where they spent two weeks (Dec. 27-Jan. 10) on their annual training trip.
 
IN THE RANKINGS
Cal is ranked second nationally with 308 points in the latest CSCAA Coaches Poll (Dec. 11). The Bears trail top-ranked Texas by only 17 points.
 
HOFFER NAMED PAC-12 SWIMMER OF THE MONTH
Junior Ryan Hoffer was named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month on Jan. 2 following his impressive showing at the Minnesota Invitational in December. Hoffer won the 50 free and helped Cal win the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay events. In total, Hoffer posted five NCAA "A" cuts at the invitational, including four relays.
 
QUAH TAKES TOP HONOR AT 2019 SEA GAMES
Senior Zheng Wen Quah excelled at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines, where he was named the Most Valuable Male Athlete across all competing sports. Quah won eight medals (six gold, two silver) – the most by any athlete at the SEA Games – for his native country of Singapore and posted two Olympic-qualifying times in the 100-meter back and 100-meter fly events.
 
GONZALEZ QUALIFIES FOR TOKYO
Redshirt sophomore Hugo Gonzalez also posted an Olympic-qualifying time in the 200-meter IM as he swam for Spain at Swim Cup Amsterdam in mid-December.
 
ADRIAN SHORTLISTED FOR LAUREUS COMEBACK OF THE YEAR
Former Cal great Nathan Adrian is a nominee for the Comeback of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards. According to Laureus' website, the world's sports media cast their votes for the greatest sportsmen, sportswomen and teams. Winners of multiple award categories, including Comeback of the Year, will be recognized on Feb. 17 in Berlin.
 
Seven months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer, Adrian returned to swimming at the World Championships in Gwangju, where he helped the United States win gold medals in the 4x100-meter free relay and the 4x100-meter mixed relay and silver in the 4x100-meter medley relay events. Adrian was also awarded USA Swimming's Golden Goggles Perseverance Award in November.
 
TEN BEARS NAMED TO USA SWIMMING NATIONAL TEAM
Cal was well-represented when USA Swimming announced its 2019-20 U.S. National Team roster in early September. Ten Bears were included on the 115-individual roster, which is made up of the nation's top six swimmers in each Olympic event. The Bears who made the roster are the following: NEXT TIME
Cal's next jump into the pool will be at the UC San Diego Invitational (Feb. 7-8) in San Diego and a Pac-12 dual meet at USC (Feb. 7) in Los Angeles.
