Two More Pac-12 Titles
Abbey Weitzeil Wins 50 Free; Bears Claim 200 Free Relay
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. –
Abbey Weitzeil defended her title in the 50-yard freestyle and Cal closed out Thursday night with a victory in the 200 free relay, as the Golden Bears continued their strong performances at the Pac-12 Championships.
Weitzeil earned a convincing win in the 50 free, getting to the wall in 21.03 to break the Pac-12 meet record for the second time during the day. She posted a then-record time of 21.09 in the morning prelims. Weitzeil, who swam an American-record 20.90 seconds in December, now owns five of the top six and seven of the top nine times all-time in the 50 free.
Weitzeil also becomes the third Golden Bear in the last 10 years to claim back-to-back 50 free titles, following Liv Jensen (2011, 2012) and
Farida Osman (2015, 2016).
Weitzeil, though, injured her arm at the finish and was held out of the free relay as a precaution. Head coach
Teri McKeever said that Weitzeil would be evaluated overnight to determine her status for the remainder of the championships.
In addition to Weitzeil, senior
Maddie Murphy placed fourth in the 50 free in a season-best 22.14 for the highest finish of her career at the Pac-12 meet. A three-time finalist in the event, her previous best was fifth last season. Freshman
Eloise Riley also made the A final and touched seventh in 22.33.
Murphy and Riley combined to comprise half of Cal's 200 free relay, with
Keaton Blovad and
Isabel Ivey filling out the other two spots. Murphy put the Bears ahead for good on her turn midway through her third leg, and Ivey brought home the Bears to a time of 1:27.22. Cal has now won the 200 free relay three years in a row.
The Bears put three swimmers into the A final of the 200 IM and came through with a 2-3-4 finish. Ivey led the Cal attack with a season-best time of 1:54.67, with sophomore
Alicia Wilson (1:55.85) and Blovad (1:55.88) right behind.
In the 500 free, all four of Cal's swimmers who qualified for the evening finals established personal bests, with the biggest improvement coming from freshman
Ayla Spitz. After lowering her PR by 3.5 seconds in the morning prelims, she posted another 3.1-second improvement in the B final to finish 10th overall with a time of 4:39.24, which stands as the No. 10 time in school history. In addition, freshman
Rachel Klinker lowered her personal best to 4:42.73 (14th place) and freshman
Sarah DiMeco to 4:43.22 (15th). Junior
Robin Neumann swam a PR 3:39.28 in prelims, then took eighth at night in 4:41.36.
Junior
Briana Thai paced the Bears on the 1-meter springboard, finishing ninth with 263.55 points – three places and 18 points higher than last year.
Stanford leads the team standings with 504 points, followed by Cal in second with 437 and USC in third in 397.
The Pac-12 Championships continue through Saturday with prelims beginning at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Both of the remaining finals sessions will be streamed through the Pac-12 Now app and on Pac-12.com, while Saturday's finals will air on the Pac-12 Network.
