SEATTLE – California track & field earned three top-two finishes, including a title from
McKay Johnson to close out the MPSF Championships on Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.
The Bears took the top two spots in the men's shot put competition as
McKay Johnson won the championship with a best throw of 20.44 meters (67-00.75).
Joshua Johnson improved on his second-best all-time indoor mark at Cal with a heave of 19.60 meters (64-03.75) to grab second-place and move into qualifying position for the NCAA Indoor Championships March 13-14 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Hakim McMorris posted three personal records on the second day of the heptathlon to total 5,626 points for a second-place finish in the two-day competition. McMorris moved into No. 3 on the Cal all-time list and qualifying position for indoor nationals depending on results from around the country.
Cal picked up 11 more personal records on Saturday after posting the same number on Friday to collect 22 over the two-day championship meet.
McMorris picked up where he left off on Friday, setting a new lifetime-best in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.23 seconds to pick up 925 points. He sat in third-place overall with two events remaining in the heptathlon.
It became two personal records in as many events with a top height of 4.30 meters (14-01.25) in the pole vault, earning 702 points. McMorris went to the last event with 4,759 points, while sitting in third place. He ran a blazing 1,000-meters for his third personal-best of the day by crossing the finish line in 2:40.59.
Opening the morning with the 60-meter hurdle finals,
Jasher Foster ran to a fourth-place finish in the men's event with a time of 7.97 seconds to pick up five team points for the Bears.
Deshae Wise crossed the line in 8.43 to take seventh-place and grab two points for the Cal women.
Cal got a pair of new personal-bests in the women's shot put from true freshmen, including a seventh-place finish from
Shyann Franklin with a top heave of 14.90 meters (48-10.75). Kristin Smoot set her best mark of the season with a throw of 13.41 meters (44-0).
The lone Bear competing in the mile races,
McKenna Brown ran to a new personal-best and an 11
th-place finish with a time of 4:47.42.
In the middle distances, Nico Bland bested his lifetime-best by more than seven tenths of a second to take eighth-place in the men's 400-meters with a time of 47.86 seconds.
Jordyn Colter ran to an indoor personal-best of 2:07.75 by passing several runners down the home-stretch on the way to an eighth-place finish in the women's 800-meters.
Closing out the competition,
Moises Medrano ran a big indoor personal-best of almost two seconds on the way to a seventh-place finish in the men's 800-meters, and
Tristan Meye leaped to a sixth-place finish in the men's triple jump with a mark of 14.93 meters (48-11.75).
