15 Golden Bears Earn All-America Honors
CSCAA Recognizes Every Cal Swimmer And Diver Who Qualified For NCAA Meet
BERKELEY – A total of 15 Golden Bears have earned All-America status under a new set of guidelines established by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America due to the impact of the coronavirus.
With the NCAA Championship canceled for 2020, the CSCAA decided to honor all relays that achieved NCAA "A" qualifying standards and all individuals selected for the championship.
Cal had 14 swimmers and one diver qualify for the NCAA meet, which was scheduled for March 18-21 in Athens, Georgia. The total represented the Bears' highest number since 2015 when the Bears captured the national title.
According to the NCAA psych sheet released before the meet was to have started, Cal's contingent featured 12 individuals ranked among the top 16, including senior
Abbey Weitzeil, who would have entered the championships as the No. 1 seed in both the 50 free and 200 free. She captured the 50 free crown in 2019 and lowered the American record to 20.90 seconds during a meet in December.
All five Cal relays were also ranked among the top 5 in the country. In 2019, the Bears captured NCAA titles in the 200 free relay, 400 free relay and 400 medley relay, and they were the runner-up in the 800 free relay and 200 medley relay.
