Julia Rosenqvist clinched her fourth Cal victory of the season with her win on Friday.
BERKELEY –Â
Julia Rosenqvist hit a backhand volley past Sarah-Maude Fortin to clinch No. 19 California's 4-3 victory over No. 49 Washington on Friday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Â
The win improved Cal's record to 11-3 and kept the Golden Bears unbeaten at the Hellman Tennis Complex at 8-0. With a 4-1 Pac-12 record, Cal is tied with Oregon for third place in the conference.
Â
Washington's record is now 9-5 (1-4 Pac-12).
Â
Cal got off to a good start when the pair of
Anna Bright and Hanna Viller Moeller knocked off Zoey Weil and Yolanda Lin, 6-2, in doubles.
Haley Giavara and
Valentina Ivanov clinched the doubles point for the Bears when they beat Vanessa Wong and Sedona Gallagher, 6-3. Rosenqvist and
Jada Bui capped doubles when they topped Fortin and Tara Chilton, 7-5.
Â
Bright increased Cal's lead to 2-0 when the senior bested Chilton, 6-0, 6-1, in singles, but then the seesaw battle began in earnest.
Â
Washington's Weil defeated Cal sophomore
Erin Richardson, 6-4, 6-0, on court five to make the score 2-1.
Â
Cal freshman
Cami Brown – playing in her first collegiate dual match – won her first singles match when she bested Lin, 6-3, 6-1, on court six. That gave the Bears a 3-1 lead.
Â
Over on court one, Washington's 30th-ranked Vanessa Wong beat Cal's Giavara, 7-5, 6-2, to make the score 3-2. The Huskies' Gallagher followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Cal's Viller Moeller on court three to knot the match at 3-3.
Â
Court two decided matters when Rosenqvist completed a 7-5, 6-3 win over Fortin.
Â
"In doubles we did a really good job of playing aggressive today," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "It was great that we had a couple of people play today who haven't necessarily been playing regularly, and we're especially proud of Cami – starting in the singles lineup for the first time – getting a win for the Bears. Winning that first team match as a freshman is a special moment. We're really proud of how she competed today, and we're excited to see her and the team continue to grow. We've got another opportunity tomorrow."

Cal returns to Hellman to host No. 47 Washington State in another Pac-12 contest on Saturday at 12 p.m.
