BERKELEY – Three different Golden Bears scored in the California men's soccer team's 3-1 victory over San Diego State on Saturday night, as the Bears played their last regular-season home game at Witter Rugby Field.
Jonathan Estrada scored the gamewinner and assisted on Cal's final goal.
Â
The Bears improved their record to 4-4-1 (4-4-1 Pac-12) with their second win of the year over San Diego State. SDSU – which fell to Cal, 3-2, on March 13 in San Diego – now has a 1-6-2 record (1-6-2 Pac-12).
Â
SDSU put the Bears on their heels early, with Tristan Weber scoring in the fifth minute.
Â
Cal got the equalizer in the 26th minute, with freshman
Evan Davila taking a short pass from midfielder
Lucas Churchill and blasting the ball past SDSU goalkeeper Tetsuya Kadono from 22 yards out.
Â
The Bears put on a shooting clinic in the first half, outshooting SDSU 13-3 and forcing Kadono to make five saves. But the score remained 1-1 at halftime.
Â
Cal kept up the attacking pressure in the second half. On a foray into the SDSU box in the 50th minute,
Francisco Perez was fouled to set up a Cal penalty kick. Estrada calmly stepped up to the spot and slotted the PK past Kadono to give the Bears a 2-1 lead
Â
In the 56th minute, Estrada passed the ball to defensive midfielder
JJ Foe Nuphaus just outside the box. The veteran Bear hit a rocket from 19 yards away for his first goal of the season and second of his career.
Â
Down 3-1, SDSU took four more shots, with only a 69th-minute effort eliciting a save out of Cal goalkeeper
Collin Travasos, who earned the win.
Â
"Obviously we needed a great response after going down early," Cal head coach
Kevin Grimes said. "Credit the goal from SDSU; it was a fantastic strike. We stayed patient and resilient at the same time. That combination helped us get the result."

Cal next plays at UCLA in the last game of the regular season on April 17 at 2:30 p.m.
