BERKELEY – The Cal Fall Invitational continued Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts, with the annual season-opening tournament featuring strong performances from various Golden Bears.
 
The Bears won twice in the singles rounds of 16, with senior Valentina Ivanov defeating Gonzaga's Catherine Broerman, 6-3, 6-1, in the Blue (top) flight and Erin Richardson beating Carly Schwartzberg of UC Davis, 6-4, 6-4, in the Gold flight. But the two Bears fell in the afternoon quarterfinals.
 
In the Gold consolation bracket, Cal junior Cami Brown bested Gabriela Tevez, 6-2, 7-5, but faltered in the quarterfinal round.
 
Two Cal doubles teams had a chance to reach Sunday finals. But Cal's Ivanov and Jessica Alsola lost in the top-flight semifinals to BYU's Emilee Astle and Yujia Huang, 8-3, and the Cal pair of Brown and Makenna Thiel dropped an 8-1 Gold-flight semifinal to Jordan Harris and Lene Mari Hovda of Saint Mary's.
 
The Cal Fall Invitational concludes on Sunday, with doubles starting at 9 a.m. followed by singles.
