BERKELEY – The California men's soccer team lost to 17th-ranked Portland, 2-0, in a nonconference game Tuesday at Edwards Stadium.
Â
Cal now has a record of 4-4-3. The Pilots are 7-3-0.
Â
Zack Andoh made his third consecutive start in goal for the Golden Bears and made five saves against a talented Portland side.
Â
The Pilots scored their first goal in the 14th minute. Buba Fofanah fed the ball to Jacob Babalai in the Cal box, and the forward made a clinical finish past Andoh.
Â
In the 17th minute, Portland got its second from the same spot in the box. This time Sebastian Nava set up Fofanah, who fired the ball inside the far post.
Â
The Bears put two shots on goal in the game, with the first coming in the 60th minute, as
Adrian Guzman had a chance to score at the back post. But Portland goalie Kash Oladapo made the save. Perhaps the Blue & Gold's best scoring opportunity came in the 65th minute, when
Wyatt Meyer severed a looping ball into the box that found
Arik Duncan. But Oladapo saved the 6-4 striker's powerful header to preserve the shutout.
Â
Cal has lost two straight since, arguably, its best result of the season so far – a 1-0 victory over previously unbeaten San Diego State, which was ranked 17th at the time and hadn't allowed a goal until facing the Bears. A 2-1 loss at unranked UCLA and the game against Portland followed. The up and down season for the Bears, who have 11 freshmen and three transfers on their roster, includes a pair of 1-1 road ties at No. 10 UNC Greensboro and No. 18 Wake Forest.
Â
"It points to a couple of things," Cal head coach
Leonard Griffin said. "We're still getting to know each other. We have 14 newcomers and 15 returners, and we have one of the toughest schedules in the country. We're playing top-ranked competition, week in and week out. We're really testing these guys. For us, the expectation is to compete and win games, and we'll continue to learn and grow and be ready for the next one."
Â
Cal plays another nonconference opponent on Saturday at 7 p.m. PT, when they take on 4-3-4 Pacific in Stockton in a game broadcast on ESPN+.
