SAN FRANCISCO – Carl Emil Overbeck had a good day at the Battle in the Bay Classic on Friday
 
Playing at the California Tennis Club, the California men's tennis senior upset the nation's No. 1 singles player to advance to the singles semifinals and partnered with Theo Dean to likewise win in the doubles quarterfinals. First the 56th-ranked and fifth-seeded Overbeck defeated San Diego's 106th-ranked Stian Klaassen 6-3, 6-3 in the singles round of 16 before facing Michigan State's top-ranked and top-seeded Ozan Baris in the quarterfinals. Overbeck, a product of Copenhagen, Denmark, held off the Spartan 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to set up a semifinal against UC Santa Barbara's Gianluca Brunkow on Saturday at 10:45 a.m. PT.
 
Dean – ranked 44th and also seeded fifth – beat Arizona's Oskar Jansson 6-2, 6-1 in his first match Friday before falling to TCU's fourth-seeded and 39th-ranked Lui Maxted 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3) in the quarters. Cal sophomore Timofey Stepanov bested UCSB's Dominique Rolland 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16 but lost to Arizona's fifth-seeded and 15th-ranked Jay Friend 7-5, 6-1 in the next round.
 
Also in the singles round of 16, Cal's Alex Chang dropped a three-setter to Friend 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and Derrick Chen lost to Arizona's Zoran Ludoski 6-3, 6-3.
 
In doubles, the 25th-ranked Dean and Overbeck beat Texas Tech's Tyler Stewart and Lorenzo Esquici 8-6. The Bears next play UCSB's 45th-ranked Brunkow and Rolland at 9 a.m. in Saturday's semis. But Cal's 13th-ranked Chang and Mikey Wright fell in the quarters to Michigan State's Baris and Matthew Forbes 8-7(2).
