A Quarterfinal Win Qualifies Silva For NCAA Singles

BERKELEY - California men's tennis senior Tiago Silva recorded a singles victory on the second day of the ITA West Sectional Championships on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

Silva defeated Stanford's Alex Chang - a former Golden Bear - 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3) in the round of 16. Silva's defeat of Chang, who is seeded fourth and ranked 41st, was the first Cal top-50 win of the season. Silva will face Zoran Ludoski of Arizona Saturday at 11 a.m. PT for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship. 

Meanwhile, Cal's Timofey Stepanov, Bernardo Munk Mesa, Winston Lee and Paris Pouatcha all suffered defeats in the round of 16. 

West sectionals end Sunday.
