An Olympian for the third time, Vollmer earned a gold medal as part of the 800m free relay in 2004, then won three goals in 2012 – 100m fly, 400m medley relay and 800m free relay. She is former world-record holder in the 100m fly, set at the London Olympics. Vollmer led Cal to its first NCAA team title as a senior in 2009. She nearly retired from swimming after the 2012 Olympics after getting married and having a son, Arlen. Since returning to the sport, she uses the hashtag #mommaonamission. While at Cal, she set school records in the 100y and 200y free and was the 2009 Pac-12 and NCAA Swimmer of the Year.
