Shields finished second in both the 100 and 200-meter butterfly at the U.S. Olympic Trials to earn his first trip to the Olympics. As a standout at Cal, Shields was named the 2012 Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year after winning NCAA titles in the 100-yard backstroke, 100 butterfly and 400 medley relay. He won the NCAA title in the 100 butterfly all four years of college and finished his college career with 11 national titles. Finished runner-up in the 100 butterfly at the 2015 AT&T Winter Nationals and won gold in the 400 medley relay at the 2015 FINA World Championships.
