Patterson is the first male gymnast to represent South Africa in the Olympics since the 1956 Games in Melbourne, Australia. Patterson, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, however, marshaled his recent Olympic journey while competing for the Golden Bears. After closing the 2015 collegiate season as an All-American in the vault (finishing sixth overall), he went on to earn an 82.132 at the World Championships in Glasgow that solidified his Olympic bid.
