An is ranked 10th among golfers participating in the 2016 Olympics and is 31st in the Official World Golf Ranking as of July 17, 2016. An turned professional in 2011 after one season at Cal but had his breakthrough season in 2015 when he earned a pair of prestigious European Tour honors. An won his first European Tour title at the BMW PGA Championship in May of 2015 and broke the tournament record for the event’s lowest winning score. It was among four top-four finishes and seven top-10 showings. He has split time between the European Tour and PGA TOUR during the 2016 season and has five top-10 finishes including a PGA TOUR career-best second-place showing at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and an impressive tied for ninth-place finish at the World Golf Championships. An was the youngest champion in the history of the U.S. Amateur at the age of 17 in 2009 and a semifinalist in 2010, while his Cal highlight during his single season with the Golden Bears was a fourth-place showing at the 2011 NCAA Tucson Regional. His parents both participated in table tennis at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul with his mother, Ji-Min Cho, earning a silver medal in women’s doubles and a bronze in women’s singles for China, while his father was a bronze medalist in men’s doubles for South Korea. His father is participating in 2016 Olympics in Rio.
