BERKELEY – A quick jolt on the first offensive play of the day got the Cal football team off to a good start but Stanford responded with a big day on the ground as the Cardinal rushed for 357 yards and the Bears couldn't keep pace as they fell 45-31 in a rain-soaked 119
th edition of the Big Game.
Davis Webb completed 34 of 57 passes for a Cal Big Game-record 393 yards and two touchdowns. 11 different receivers caught a pass, led by
Chad Hansen with seven receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Stanford won the yardage battle 555-483 behind a Big Game-record 284 rushing yards by Christian McCaffrey.
Cal (4-7, 2-6 Pac-12) got Saturday's proceedings started with about as good an opening statement as the Bears could have hoped for. On their first offensive play of the day, Webb found Hansen on a quick in cut and Hansen did the rest, dashing across the field and through the Stanford defense for a 70-yard touchdown.
Stanford (8-3, 6-3) countered with its own quick strike as, after a penalty on Cal and a squib kick, Keller Chryst scored on a 16-yard touchdown run. The score stayed tied to the end of the quarter but it took just over a minute in the second for the Bears to re-take the lead with
Tre Watson bowling over a Stanford defender for a 7-yard touchdown run.
The Cardinal took a 17-14 lead into halftime by scoring the final 10 points of the quarter. A 9-yard pass from Chryst to Dalton Schultz and a 40-yard field goal by Conrad Ukropina as time expired gave Stanford the edge despite a relatively even yardage battle (270-252 Stanford) to that point.
Stanford widened its lead in the third quarter with some major help from McCaffrey. The junior broke free for a 90-yard touchdown run, then later in the quarter scampered in from 11 yards out to put the Cardinal up 31-17. An 8-yard touchdown run by Watson capped a 13-play, 75-yard drive just before the quarter ended and the Bears trailed 31-24 as the game headed to the fourth quarter.
McCaffrey scored his third touchdown of the day on Stanford's next drive, plunging in from a yard out to make it 38-24 with 12:31 to play. Chryst connected with Trenton Irwin for a 30-yard touchdown with 4:17 left to play to provide the final score for the Cardinal. Webb found Hansen for their second touchdown of the day with 3:01 left, scoring on a 16-yard pass to break the Cal passing yardage record in the Big Game and provide the game's final margin.
"Disappointed in the way the night played out," head coach
Sonny Dykes said. "I thought going into halftime we were in a pretty good position. We came out in the third quarter and didn't maximize our possessions on offense. We punted them down inside the 10-yard line and gave up a 90-yard touchdown run. I think that was the big momentum thing. At that point, Stanford had the momentum and we never seemed to be able to get it back. And, we've got to be able to play better defense. Ultimately, that's what it comes down to. You can't give up 350 yards rushing against anybody and expect to have a chance to win."
Cal brings the 2016 regular season to a close next Saturday when the Bears host UCLA at California Memorial Stadium. Kickoff for that game has not yet been announced.
