Big Inning Spells Trouble For Bears

BERKELEY, Calif. – Nine runs in the third inning put visiting Oregon in control and the Cal baseball team couldn't make up the difference as the Bears fell 13-2 in the second game of a three-game series at Evans Diamond.

Cal (8-9, 0-2 Pac-12) struck first on Saturday night, hitting the scoreboard first with a pair of extra-base hits. Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr. got the Bears rolling in the first inning, doubling to right-center field with one out and freshman Andrew Vaughn gave Mitchell the chance to trot home with an opposite-field home run to make it 2-0 Bears.

That lead carried Cal into the third inning but Oregon (13-4, 2-0) took over before the Bears had a chance to get back to the plate. The Ducks sent 16 batters to the plate and plated nine runs thanks to seven hits and two Cal errors. The rally chased Bears starter Jared Horn after just 2 1/3 innings and forced Cal to go to its bullpen.

Oregon added three more runs in the eighth to finish the scoring. Cal finished the night with four hits, led by a two-hit night from Mitchell. Arman Sabouri, Andrew Buckley and Ian Lutz finished out the game on the mound for the Bears.

The Bears and Ducks return to Evans Diamond on Sunday to conclude their three-game series with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch. Cal heads to Los Angeles next weekend to continue Pac-12 play with three games against UCLA. That series will be televised live by Pac-12 Networks.
