LOS ANGELES - A four-run fourth inning wasn't enough for the Cal baseball team to hold off host UCLA as the Bruins rallied for nine runs over a three-inning stretch and the Bears fell 9-5 in the first of three games at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Cal (9-10, 1-3 Pac-12) got its offense going in the fourth inning.
Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr. started the inning with a single up the middle, then immediately stole second base. Freshman
Andrew Vaughn was next to the dish and sent a perfectly placed ground ball past the first baseman into the right field corner for a double, scoring Mitchell and giving Cal the lead. The hits did not stop there as
Denis Karas singled,
Jonah Davis walked,
Tanner Dodson singled and
Max Flower added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
UCLA (8-11, 2-2) got on the board in the fifth, chasing Cal starter
Jared Horn in the process. A leadoff walk forced the Bears to go to the bullpen and Bruins shortstop Nick Valaika got UCLA on the board with a two-run home run.
The Bruins added five more runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. Chase Strumpf's solo home run, a sac fly by Sean Bouchard, a two-run double by Kyle Cuellar and an RBI single by Valaika did the damage and put UCLA ahead 7-4.
An RBI single by Karas in the seventh showed Cal's resolve but UCLA answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double by Daniel Amaral. The Bears couldn't get any closer despite a 9-8 advantage in the hit column. Vaughn and Karas led the way with two hits apiece.
"I felt very comfortable out there and prepared for this start just like I would any other, there were just a couple innings that did not go our way" said starting pitcher
Jared Horn. "But tomorrow we'll come out and compete and try to get a win."
Horn worked into the fifth inning in his first Friday start and allowed one run on two hits. He also struck out four and walked five.
Zayne Patino,
Erik Martinez and
Arman Sabouri finished the game on the mound for the Bears.
Cal and UCLA return to Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday at 4 p.m. for game two of their three-game series. Right-hander
Joey Matulovich is scheduled to get the ball for the Bears and will be opposed by UCLA right-hander Moises Ceja. The game will be broadcast live by Pac-12 Networks.
