Greene Home Run Helps Carry Cal To Series Sweep

BERKELEY – One day after a big home run carried the Cal baseball team to a series win, the Golden Bears again turned to the long ball as a means of sending fans home happy as junior Tyrus Greene launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to send his team to a 7-6 victory and four-game series sweep over Brown at Evans Diamond.

Having rallied to tie the game at 5 in the seventh inning, Cal (11-4) fell behind again when an unearned run in the top of the eighth pushed Brown (3-5) back in front. A two-out walk by Cameron Eden gave the Golden Bears some life in the bottom of the inning and brought Greene to the plate in a position to do some damage.

After taking a ball and swinging through the second pitch of the at-bat for strike one, Greene got the fastball he was looking for from Brown reliever JJ Sliepka. All it took was one swing and Cal's catcher put his team in front for the first time all day, driving the ball over the fence in right field to make it 7-6. Tanner Dodson entered in the ninth inning and shut the door with another dominant performance, striking out three to earn his third save of the season.

"Last year, sometimes we probably lose this game and maybe a few others in the series. We just found the right formula at the end of the game. It was (Arman) Sabouri and Darren (Baker) yesterday. All it takes is one swing and last year we weren't able to get that swing sometimes."

Cal's ability to make a late-inning push came courtesy of several big performances. Chief among those was starting pitcher Matt Ladrech who, on his birthday, equaled his longest outing of the season with seven innings pitched. The senior southpaw allowed five runs (four earned) and eight hits while also walking two and striking out four.

Erik Martinez and Zayne Patino bridged the gap to Dodson in the late innings and Patino improved to 2-0 on the season by recording the final out of the eighth.

Offensively, Cal was the beneficiary of a few stretches of wildness by the Brown pitching staff as the Golden Bears walked nine times on the afternoon. Freshman Sam Wezniak had two hits and Cal recorded four hits as a team.

"We haven't played a lot of close games early on until these last three and I thought (Brown) did a great job," Cal head coach Mike Neu said. "The whole team stepped up. We didn't play great today; we made a couple errors, we didn't make some pitches we needed to make but the same guys came back and made some huge plays and got big hits late in the game. It says a lot about our guys will to compete and to find a way to win. It was a good team win again, and that was a good way to finish the weekend with a sweep, get a little rest and get ready for conference next weekend."

Cal will take Monday off, then pick right up with more non-conference action as the Bears head across the Bay Bridge to face San Francisco on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Friday brings the start of Pac-12 play with Oregon State paying a visit to Evans Diamond for the first game of a three-game weekend series. Friday's contest is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch, Saturday's game will begin at 3:05 p.m. and the Sunday finale  will get going at 1:05 p.m.
