Bears Drop Twin Bill In Oregon

BERKELEY – A cold day in Eugene proved a chilly day for the Cal baseball team when it came to the win column as the Bears dropped both ends of a doubleheader against host Oregon, falling 8-5 and 7-2 to the Ducks at PK Park.

Cal and Oregon will meet on Sunday at noon for game three of their Pac-12 series. Live video and stats are available by clicking the Schedule link at CalBears.com.

GAME ONE

Miscues plagued the Bears as a strong start by right-hander Jared Horn went by the wayside and Cal fell 8-5 in the first game Saturday.

Oregon took control early in the contest with the help of a few Cal missteps. An error prolonged the Ducks' first at-bat and they took advantage, scoring three unearned runs to put the Bears down 3-0. A throwing error in the second contributed to a two-run frame and a stop play with runners on the corners allowed another run to score in the third to leave Cal chasing a 6-0 deficit after three innings.

The Bears did chase their way back into the game, first scoring three runs in the fifth inning on an error and wild pitch by Oregon and an RBI single by Tyrus Greene. A two-run infield single by Cameron Eden brought Cal to within a run at 6-5 in the eighth inning and gave the Bears hope of a comeback. Oregon added two runs of its own in the bottom of the eighth though and Ducks reliever Parker Kelly retired the Bears in order in the ninth to close out the game.

Horn pitched the Bears into the eighth inning and gave them a chance to win, allowing just four earned runs, striking out six and walking just two. Arman Sabouri finished up on the mound, pitching the final inning. Cal collected nine hits as a team, led by two apiece from Greene, Darren Baker and Eden.

GAME TWO

Cal jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first but the Bears didn't score again until the ninth as Oregon took the lead in the middle innings en route to a 7-2 decision.

An RBI ground out by Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr. got the Bears going in the first inning, staking starter Aaron Shortridge to a slim early lead. Oregon countered with single runs in the third and fourth innings, then scored two more in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to pull away.

Greene gave the Bears life in the ninth inning, contributing an RBI double, but that was all Cal could muster in the way of a comeback. The Bears tallied eight hits for the game, led by two apiece from Greene and Andrew Vaughn.

Shortridge worked into the sixth inning for the Bears, allowing four runs on eight hits. The junior from Napa, Calif. added to his strikeout total, fanning eight while walking just two.
