EUGENE, Ore. – Senior
Matt Ladrech played the role of stopper, junior
Tanner Dodson finished what Ladrech started and
Andrew Vaughn belted his 12
th home run of the year as the Cal baseball team scored a 5-3 win over host Oregon to close out a three-game series at PK Park.
Â
One day after dropping both games of a doubleheader, Cal (13-9, 1-5 Pac-12) turned to its senior Sunday starter to steady the ship. Ladrech did just that, limiting Oregon to just one run on four hits while striking out six and walking no one.
Â
While Ladrech gave the Bears a chance to win, the offense used two big innings to do all its damage. The first rally came in the second inning when an RBI double by
Jonah Davis and RBI single by
Sam Wezniak plated the first runs of the game and put Cal ahead 2-0.
Â
Three innings later, Vaughn took center stage with another big swing of the bat. A two-out error by Oregon extended the top of the fifth inning and Vaughn connected with men on base, driving one over the fence in center field for a three-run home run that put Cal up 5-0. The blast was Vaughn's 12
th of the season, equaling his 2017 total that led the Pac-12.
Â
Oregon (14-8, 2-4) made its bid to get back in the game in the sixth inning, loading the bases with one out and chasing Ladrech from the game. Dodson came in and got out of the jam though, limiting the Ducks to just one run and retiring both batters he faced in the inning.
Â
Cal's closer never gave the ball back to head coach
Mike Neu, eventually working 3 2/3 innings to earn his fourth save of the season. A two-run double by Oregon's Kenyon Yovan gave the Ducks hope in the ninth but Dodson shut the door one batter later, ending the threat with a fly out to right.
Â
Tyrus Greene continued to show why he is one of the Pac-12's top leadoff men, leading the Bears with three hits on Sunday. Wezniak went 2 for 3 while Vaughn went 1 for 2 with a run, three RBIs and three walks. Cal collected eight hits as a team.
Â
Cal returns to action on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as UC Davis pays a visit to Evans Diamond. The game kicks off an eight-game homestand for the Bears with UCLA visiting for three games beginning on Thursday. Utah comes to town from April 5-7 in a series that will be broadcast live by Pac-12 Networks and San Francisco makes the trip across the Bay on April 10 for a non-conference game that will also be broadcast live by Pac-12 Networks.
