BERKELEY – Though it allowed runs in only two innings, the Cal baseball team couldn't collect the big hits it needed to rally down the stretch as the Bears dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 15 UCLA in game two of a three-game series at Evans Diamond.
Â
Cal (15-10, 2-6 Pac-12) struck first on an almost warm Friday night in Berkeley as
Jonah Davis continued his tear at the plate by sending a solo home run over the fence in right field to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. That was all the scoring for either team in the early stages of the game as Cal's
Jared Horn and UCLA's Zach Pettway dueled on the mound.
Â
UCLA (16-6, 6-2) countered with the next two rallies to take the lead. A two-run home run by Daniel Amaral put the Bruins ahead 2-1 in the fifth and three innings later a spate of Cal wildness on the mound set the table for an RBI single by RJ Teijeiro and run-scoring walk by Jake Hirabayashi to make it 4-1 UCLA.
Â
The Bears' best chance at a comeback came in the bottom of the eighth when
Tanner Dodson drew a leadoff walk and Davis followed by getting hit by a pitch. Three batters later,
Sam Wezniak drove in a run with a two-out single to center field but Amaral, who had already robbed a Cal home run earlier in the contest, threw a runner out of the plate to end the inning with the Bears still trailing 4-2.
Â
UCLA's ability to fight off pitches at the plate served the Bruins well on Friday as Cal pitchers walked nine and hit two more. Horn departed after five innings having allowed just two earned runs and the combination of
Zayne Patino,
Joey Matulovich,
Arman Sabouri and
Andrew Buckley finished the game out of the bullpen. The Bears collected seven hits as a team with seven different batters tallying one apiece.
Â
Cal and UCLA return to Evans Diamond on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the final game of their three-game series. The Bears will start RHP
Aaron Shortridge while the Bruins have not yet announced a starter. Cal remains at home next weekend as Utah pays a visit from April 5-7. That series will be broadcast live by Pac-12 Networks.
