Rogers Wins MPSF Championship On Day One
Camryn Rogers Claimed The Weight Throw Championship To Open The MPSF Championship
SEATTLE, Wash. – California track & field opened the 2019 MPSF Championship in style on Friday afternoon as
Camryn Rogers won the MPSF title in the weight throw. The Bears also set six new marks on the school's all-time top 10 list on the first day of competition at Dempsey Indoor.
Rogers claimed the first conference title of her career as she started the day by winning the weight throw. Rogers won the championship with a mark of 21.04m/69-0.50, a full 10 inches over the rest of the competition. Rogers hit her mark on the first attempt of the day. She cleared the 20m mark on four of her attempts, something that the rest of the competitors were only able to do five total times. Rogers secured 10 points for the Bears.
Noelle Schiller took fourth place in the women's long jump. The sophomore was leading the event after the first round as she jumped 19-6.75. She bettered that mark and tied her personal best with a mark of 19-7.00 in the fourth round. Schiller continued to hold the lead until the fifth round when three opponents passed her. Schiller added five points to the Bears' tally. Freshman
Sydney Reid made the final and finished in ninth place with a leap of 5.67m/18-7.25 while
Windy Margerum took 11th with a personal best leap of 5.60m/18-4.50.
Jared Geredes put the men's team on the board as he took seventh place in the men's long jump with a leap of 7.22m/23-8.25. Geredes tied his personal best on his third attempt, but cleared 23 feet on three of his six attempts.
Deshae Wise move up the school's all-time top 10 list with a time of 8.38 in the 60m hurdles. Wise moved from fourth into third place, passing Emani Truluck's 2011 mark. Wise finished sixth in the prelims to advance to tomorrow's final. On the men's side,
Jasher Foster (3rd, 7.92) and
Misana Viltz (8th, 8.00) both booked spots in the final.
In the women's 60m prelim,
Jackie Patterson earned a spot in the final with a time of 7.51. For the second consecutive meet, Patterson set a personal best and moved up the school's all-time list. She now sits in fourth. She was joined on the list by a pair of freshmen as
Maisie Stevens tied Wise for seventh all-time with a mark of 7.57 while
Ezinne Abba is now in ninth with a time of 7.58.
In the 200m,
Zion Corrales Nelson earned two points for the Bears as she took seventh in the 200m with a time of 24.64. Stevens moved into 10
th on the school's all-time record book with a time of 24.74 as she just missed scoring by taking ninth.
Jackie Patterson took 10
th as she finished in 24.75.
Paramveer Chohan bettered his eighth-best mark in school history as he finished ninth in the men's 200m as he crossed the line in 21.57.
The women's distance medley relay of
Jordyn Colter,
Jenna Mencarelli,
Rebecca Croft and
Mina Anglero finished in 11:32.22 to move into 10
th on the school's all-time indoor record book. The men's team of
Nikolaus Moore,
Nicolas Bland,
Benjamin Micallef and
Andrew Burkhardt finished in seventh place with a time of 9:58.96 to score two points for the men's team.
After the first day of the heptathlon contest,
Tyler Brendel sits in first place with 3009 points. The redshirt junior took third place in the 60m with a season-best time of 7.05. He followed that up with a PR in the long jump as he took first place with a mark of 7.05m/23-1.75. Brendel had fouled his first two attempts and would have cost himself a chance at the title with another foul, but he pulled off the event-winning mark on his third and final attempt. Brendel was the top competitor in the shot put as he recorded a distance of 12.97m/42-6.75. He finished the day by taking ninth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.83m/6-0.00.
After the first day of action, the Cal women's squad sits in ninth place with 17 points. The men are tied for 12th with four points. The MPSF Championship will continue tomorrow, with the action slated to start at 10 a.m. at Dempsey Indoor.
