Vaughn's Three-Run Homer Helps Cal Down USF

Bears Bash Four Homers For The Second Game In A Row

BERKELEY – The position in the batting order was different, but the results were very familiar Tuesday night from Andrew Vaughn.

Cal's All-America first baseman launched a three-run homer to highlight a big offensive night for the Bears in a 10-7 non-conference victory over USF at Evans Diamond.

Cameron Eden, Cole Elvis and Sam Wezniak also homered, as Cal (10-8) went deep four times for the second consecutive game. Max Flower had three hits and made an impact with his arm from right field, and the Bears won their second in a row to gain some confidence heading into a three-game weekend series at Oregon State against the defending national champions.

With catcher Korey Lee ineligible for a game after getting ejected Sunday, Vaughn hit third for the first time all season after batting second for most of the year. Darren Baker moved up from the fifth spot to the second spot and had a nice game with a bunt single and a sacrifice fly to go along with a dazzling bare-handed play on a drag bunt.

Cal finished with 12 hits and reached double figures in runs for the fifth time in 2019. That was timely after the bullpen was stretched thin in Sunday's 9-8 win over USC.

"Really, we knew we needed the offense to step up today, and they did it," Cal head coach Mike Neu said. "For us to score 10 runs, you know, we really needed those 10 runs."

Vaughn, who homered seven times over his first 10 games, entered Tuesday not having gone deep over his past seven contests. But he had a three-hit game as recently as Friday and came in hitting .414.

With two aboard in the fourth, he drove a monster shot well beyond the wall in left to stretch a 4-3 lead to 7-3. Last year's Golden Spikes winner now has eight homers and 23 RBI in 18 games to go with a .426 batting average.

"That's our dude," Elvis said. "It's a good time to be heating up, for Oregon State."

Elvis, a freshman from Vacaville, has made the most of his opportunities so far. In three starts over the past week – two at catcher and one at DH – Elvis has gone 5-for-11 with two homers and eight RBI.

He credited Vaughn and fellow teammate Garret Nielsen with some batting tips during the game, telling him he was chopping at the ball.

"I tried to make an adjustment, and next thing I know , I start getting some barrels" on the ball, Elvis said. "I think it's just the good culture we have, backing each other up."

Flower went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI and has reached base safely in all 18 games so far. But one of the biggest plays of the game came in the sixth when USF loaded the bases with no outs.

USF's Robert Emery hit a medium-deep fly ball to right, and Flower fired a strike to home plate to keep Riley Helland from trying to score. Lefty reliever Lucas Gather retired Riki Urata on a soft liner and then struck out Jacob Munoz to hold  the Dons (12-8) off the board and keep it a 7-5 game at the time.

Now the Bears head to Corvallis for a tough assignment against Oregon State, ranked  No. 7 in the country by Baseball America.

"We are going to face some tough pitching this weekend, so we're going to have to bear down and do a great job," Neu said. "But, coming off two games in a row where we put up big runs, that's a good feeling going into the weekend."
