Cal Sends Three More To NCAA Championship
Corrales Nelson, Kaukolahti and Viltz Qualify For NCAA Championship On Saturday
SACRAMENTO -- Cal track and field will send eight student-athletes to the NCAA Championship after three more booked their spot on day three of action at the NCAA West Prelims at Hornet Stadium.
Tuomas Kaukolahti will return to the NCAA Championship for the second straight outdoor season. The Pac-12 champion in the triple jump qualified with a mark of 15.98m/52-5.25. Kaukolahti hit that mark on his first jump to ensure that there would be little drama in the qualification process. He finished fifth and will travel to Austin for the NCAA Championship from June 5-8.
After just missing a qualifying spot in the 100m,
Zion Corrales Nelson came back in the 200m and finished in the top three of her heat to earn a spot in Austin. The junior set a personal best of 23.16, which was also the second-best time in school history and a national record for the Philippines. It bettered her time of 23.18, which she ran in the prelims yesterday. Corrales Nelson finished in 14th overall, but earned an automatic qualifying spot by taking third place in her heat.
Misana Viltz will join Corrales Nelson and Kaukolahti in Austin as he finished in ninth place in the 110m hurdles. The senior ran 13.85 and took fourth in his heat. He had to wait out the final two heats to find out that he had the top time-qualifying mark and a place at the NCAA Championship. It was Viltz's second-best time of the year, trailing only his time of 13.78, which he set in yesterday's prelims.
Unfortunately for the Bears,
Jasher Foster was the first person out of the men's 110m hurdles race. Foster ran 13.96 and finished in 13th place, just .02 seconds from the 12th place spot and a qualifying spot.
Sophomore
Joshua Johnson concluded his sophomore campaign with a throw of 18.72m/61-5 in the shot put. Johnson opened with a mark of 18.02m/59-1.50, but bettered it on his second mark. Johnson's third throw appeared to go even further, but he clipped the toe board on his final rotation, creating a foul. Johnson finished in 18th place, 10 spots better and 3.5 feet further than he did at last year's NCAA Prelims.
The women's 4x100m team was disqualified from the competition after the third exchange wasn't completed within the zone. The squad of
Jackie Patterson, Corrales Nelson,
Maisie Stevens and
Ezinne Abba recorded a time of 45.20, which would have placed 16th in the field.
The Bears will be sending eight student-athletes to the NCAA Championship in Austin.
Silviu Bocancea (Hammer),
Camryn Rogers (Hammer),
Rebecca Croft (800m),
Paramveer Chohan (400m hurdles) and
Iffy Joyner (Discus) will join Corrales Nelson, Kaukolahti and Viltz at the NCAA Championship. The title chase will begin Wednesday, June 5 and extend through Saturday, June 8 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
